Waltham-based cybersecurity firm Carbon Black is taking an even greater aim at Symantec and other major competitors with its acquisition of Confer, a venture-backed, next-generation antivirus company based in Southborough.

Carbon Black announced the deal on Tuesday, making it the company’s fourth acquisition, which includes when the company was known as Bit9 and acquired Carbon Black, the name it would eventually rename to in 2015.
